Friday, June 16, 2006 first post from Shanghai! (:
and so here i am, safe and sound, sitting in xiaoyan's house blogging. my plane stinked! haha, but met st nicks girls on school trip to China too. same flight, how coincidental. it's so nice, i miss st nicks. glad to be here with my toufu in Shanghai (:
the trip so far has been fun! tho im really not used to the people here. they're generally very rude and some get really nasty when you don't buy things from them. sometimes it's scary and you think twice about trying clothes and bargaining.
the bargaining is really fun tho. got a number of things at a steal tho i got cheated too! actually whenever i bargain and they suddenly agree to my offered price, i feel cheated. i've learnt that you're supposed to get your goods around 20% of the price they offer. one neat trick is walking away, always helps. haha.
cheap things around Shanghai are plentiful.
food here is really cheap. take the lunch me, my sister and xiaoyan ate yesterday. cold salted chicken, brocoli, tang bao, noodles, yang chow fried rice and 2 desserts at a chinese restaurant only came up to RMB180 (SGD36). their cuisine here is really diversified and we have ate korean, jap, german, yunan and a lot of chinese.
but im getting sick of chinese cos its so oily. i am starting to drink vinegar and im going to puke if i have to eat another dumpling again. they have fish&co and nydc here which is cheaper also. & ice cream here is damn cheap. magnum costs only $0.60! the hot weather and the cheap prices makes it so tempting to eat ice cream.
so other than eating and bargaining our way around Shanghai, we went to JJ Lin's concert on saturday. we're not his fans so we didn't know most songs he sang. sat there waiting for yi qian nian, jiang nan and dou jiang you tiao to be sang while chatting in between. but that guy can beatbox really well. im impressed. and being intellectual people, we attended a play with Su Yong Peng acting in it the day before.
also been to Pearl Tower, Yuyuan Gardens, Nanjing road, the Bund, Xing Tian Di and many other places to get a feel of the real Shanghai. it's really cheap to cab here, around SGD3. pretty much our choice of transport. other than that, we've taken the bus, MTR and walked our way around.
and i love the pretty pink sky at night but its sad to know its that way cos the neon lights shine on the dust from their massive air pollution. still, pretty! :)
england won trinidad 2-0. i actually caught a bit of the match. world cup fever :D
my sister's flying back later on a 10am flight so have to wake early to go to the airport. so i'll sleep soon. im going to attend chinese class with xiaoyan and have dinner with her parents. her dad's coming in from beijing and mum from singapore. got to do MFS tho. tomorrow night!
i miss you!
